Welcome To The Winning Mind Set Tip of the Week

The building block exercises for success

One of the best ways to begin with goal setting as a habit is to work from a list on a daily basis. Here are a few tips on using a list to increase your productivity and develop your goal setting muscles.

1) Work from a list every day. Update your list for the next day the night before or first thing the morning of. Write it down! Something amazing will happen when you materialize your thoughts on to paper.

2) Hold fast to your "standard procedure" of working from your list, refusing to do anything that is not on the list. This is accomplished by updating your list as you work through your day.

3) Evaluate tasks by deadline. Whenever possible work on your largest or most difficult, least favorite task first. This will ensure it gets done, not ending up on the next day's list. If you insist on completing the smaller tasks first you will make little headway. Small tasks will continue to appear as your day unfolds.

4) Evaluate your tasks for value and return. Which task will bring you the most return on your effort? One whale is worth a thousand buckets of minnows!

5) By working from a list everyday you will accomplish more in a week than most people do in months or even years.

6) Remember there is no such thing as unreasonable goals, just unreasonable time frames.

Until next time,
Have an outstanding week.

The law of harvest is to reap more than you sow. Sow an act, and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny.

Kevin,
I've wanted to say thank you for a long time. I'm out here training at the Canadian National Cycling center and next year I should be racing with the National team. It's been pretty amazing how much things have changed over the last two years. In 2003, I was struggling just to finish in local races at the lowest category. This summer I was racing against the best in North America and even had the US National champion find me after a race just to tell me he thought I was "f***ing strong." I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what caused such a dramatic change from 2003 to 2004 because whatever it was is obviously a very important component of success. I've looked at the changes in my training over that year, but they simply weren't enough. I truly believe that this turnaround was due in large part to the mental skills that you taught me. My training may not have changed very much, but my attitude towards my training and racing was entirely different.....
I consider the skills that you helped teach me to be some of my most valuable assets as an athlete. It's been fascinating living out in Victoria and watching some of the best in the country. I've observed that strength and potential aren't what determine who goes far and who doesn't Yes, you have to have the strength, but what I've seen is that the riders who "make it" are the ones with the right attitude and mental discipline.
